Bottling (and corking) our Laissez-Faire Barleywine

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Last year we bottled the first Laissez-Faire in 22oz bombers and dipped each bottle in gold wax. They looked amazing. They were also impossible to open. This year we switched to 750mL Belgian-style bottles (note: 750mL = 25.4oz), complete with corks and cages:

Those corks were tough to get on with our dinky corker. I broke [...]

Using salt and ice to cool wort faster

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

But first… a picture from Monday. Finally Jeff’s mighty back porch got some use. We usually convene back there post-brewing, but this shot was taken during brewing, proving that we do indeed have friends. Free beer helps.

And now to the REALLY interesting stuff. We got some great suggestions on how to cool wort in the [...]

Jonathan and Joel successfully make beer (without Jeff)

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

As we’ve already mentioned Jeff is on vacation so Jonathan and I had to take over the role of brewmaster for the evening.  Basically it involved playing on an excel spreadsheet, taking a few gravity readings, and doing some cheesy tours for the newcomers where you pretend to know a lot about beer…it was NOT [...]

Brewing tonight: a crazy awesome stout

Monday, September 15th, 2008

It’s been awhile since we’ve experimented with new beers. We’ve been concentrating almost exclusively on perfecting our Belgian wit, Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale and Eye Patch Ale. But Jeff is out of town, so Joel and I were given a little bit of a leash this Monday. We’re going to be brewing a hefty oatmeal [...]

Cooling wort in the summer

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Our post a few days ago brought up some thoughts on cooling wort. In the South this is especially relevant in the summer. We brew outside, so getting the temperature down can be a time-consuming process. I thought I’d go into a little more depth on how we cool our wort and open up the [...]

A new beer bar opens up in Atlanta

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

If Atlanta needs one thing, it’s more beer. That’s kind of the premise we’re basing starting our brewery on, and it’s definitely true. Marisa turned me onto The Porter Beer bar, a new joint that just opened up in Little 5 Points. And then my beer email list started emailing about, saying things like:
This was [...]

Get a text alert about brewing every Monday

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

We get a lot of emails every Sunday or Monday asking if we’re brewing that Monday. The answer is usually “Most definitely!” but there have been a few (sad) times when we’ve had to cancel. But wouldn’t it be great to know ahead of time, without having to email?
To keep you guys informed, we’re starting [...]
