Our beer gun works like a charm
We recently purchased a Blichmann beer gun, which allows us to bottle straight from a keg, giving us much more flexibility when it comes to bottling (when? how many bottles? how can we get Joel to leave us alone?). We’ve used the beer gun a total of 2 times now, and it’s worked like a charm.
We still don’t really know how the beer ends up carbonated and drinkable, but it has something to do with injecting CO2 into the head of each bottle right before capping it. And the beer comes out great – even the ones Joel bottles!
I know there’s been some rumblings about other homebrewers/beer bloggers moving to the beer gun. If you want to know more, you can read about it on Blichmann’s muy sophisticated website. Unfortunately, you can’t buy it there. You’ll have to go to your favorite homebrew supplier. I think we got ours from Northern Brewer.

So you don’t prime with sugar at all? Or do you still prime? That thing is pretty cool, and looks two times easier than the other counter pressure fillers.

Also, wow. I always kinda thought you guys were joking about Bryan Adams.
With all the talk about buying local, you guys should be listening to Elf Power. The pride of Athens.

I think most people using the beer gun force carbonate and then bottle… Is that what you’re doing?
I think the main advantage of the beer gun is that it allows you to purge the bottle with CO2 before putting the beer in, which eliminates the concern of oxidation.

Kevin, no priming sugar is needed. But to Brad’s point, we force carbonate in a keg for a few days before bottling. And yeah, we actually do put on Bryan Adams most Monday nights. Jonathan really likes the slow songs.

Jonathan, probably the best Joel picture ever, by the way.

I’ve been thinking about getting one, this just seals the deal. How well does it work when there’s a lot of pressure in the keg? Nice video guys!
