The south gets mo’ betta’ Belgian beer

The thing about Belgian beer is that you can never really have enough of it. Even when you’ve got such fine establishments as Brick Store. And – bless my stars – it seems that the South is starting to realize this. Yes, THE South. You know, the one that hates microbreweries. A new Belgian bar will be opening in Asheville, NC a mere week from today, according to the Asheville Beer Blog. Kilgore Trout says:

The Thirsty Monk will open its doors on Wednesday, January 23rd, adding an entirely new dimension to the beer scene in Asheville. While I have seen the occasional Chimay tap around town, nothing compares to walking into a place and seeing 14 Belgian or Belgian style beers on tap, with over 100 bottles to complement the draft selection.

Trout attended the pre-opening and had nothing but good things to say:

It is everything that I could have hoped for. The draft selection was a good representation of different Belgian styles, and over half of them have not been seen in Asheville before.

Apparently The Thirsty Monk will also be serving local Belgian-style brews. I wonder… will any Triangle brews be popping up? Read the entire write-up here.

I used to be a very anti Belgian beer sort of dude, but I’ve come around very quickly. My initial beer education took place in Germany, so I was all about those hay colored Pilsners. Since I started brewing though, I have branched out and am really enjoying them. I just had an Ommegang the other night, and boy, was that yummy.

    WOOHOO! BELGIUM!
