Christians drink beer too
Stigmas abound regarding the South and alcohol. Rum runners. Bootleggers. The Southern Baptist Convention. All in all, not very good associations. And when it comes to Christians drinking beer, it can get heated quickly. True, Christianity has a long history of beer love (think Trappist monks), but the religion also has a more recent history of beer hate (think Prohibition).
So. How do we sort it all out? Fortunately, Wilson over at brewvana has taken it upon himself to discuss these issues weekly. The first installment tackles the question: Is prohibition scripturally sound or is it a cultural preference? Wilson has treated the subject fairly and – I think – correctly.
Some of you are aware, but Monday Night Brewery was born out of a bible study that I was a part of with Jeff, Joel and a bunch of other scalawags. And not only are we Christians that drink and brew beer, but we plan on making a career out of it. Sean over at Pop the Cap in North Carolina is in the same boat.
In fact, Sean has already added to the dialogue over at brewvana. I encourage everyone to do the same, no matter your religion. I think we will all find this series enlightening, and even if people can’t agree on a religion, at least we should be able to agree on enjoying a good beer together.

Yes, Christians drink beer…
…they just do it through a hole in a sheet!
:-)

Brad, I don’t even know what that means. I’m not sure I want to.

I read that Mars Hill church treatise, and I think my favorite part was that mockery is considered a sin.

“Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
Benjamin Franklin
Pretty much sums it up for me.

Jonathan,
It’s a reference to this, an old myth that orthodox Jews do the dirty deed through a hole in a sheet…
Of course, it loses its humor when one has to explain it like this…

Oh thank God. I was just hoping it wasn’t a reference to the KKK.

Thanks for contributing, Jonathan. It should be an interesting few weeks.

Wow, if the explanation hasn’t killed the joke, I’m sure the mention of the KKK will do it.
Thanks a lot, buzzkill!

I was raised in the Lutheran tradition so beer and wine have had a relatively normal place in daily life. I didn’t learn of religious stigmatism until some family members were born again and added alcohol to the list of things that were “wrong.”

I’m Christian, I enjoy beer greatly. Therefore, Christians drink beer.
I can’t remember what verse, but there’s a proverb that encourages the use of “strong drink,” of course in moderation.
