We finally make use of our brewing software

We’ve been using ProMash to help us plan our recipes for the past few months. It has been really nice (despite the fact that it doesn’t run on a Mac). We can change scales, figure out IBUs, beer color, expected ABVs (called gravity in the brewing community), as well as a slew of other things. We’ve been so intent on not getting the most out of our money, however, that we have yet to take advantage of ProMash’s powerful “inventory” features.

We currently have 150-200 pounds of somewhere between 10-15 different types of grain. We also have numerous hop varieties and yeasts to worry about stocking. Since we brew every week, we go through this stuff pretty quickly.

Yesterday we met to brew. Since I was (and still am) recovering from a mysterious Mexican virus, I was regulated to inventory duty. And I performed these tasks to the best of my abilities (which are pretty amazing).
Now, whenever we brew, ProMash will subtract the ingredients from what we have in inventory. We can also easily add ingredients. And – get this – given the recipes we have stored in ProMash, the program can also suggest what we are actually able to brew on any given Monday. Or Saturday. The day itself doesn’t really matter.

Nice. Some people will think that getting excited about brewing software makes us dorks. Oh yeah? Well to them, we say, “YOU’RE dorks.”
