The Buffalo Theory (today’s beer nugget from Cliff Clavin)
Cliff Clavin of Cheers was a wise man. The kind of guy you’d recruit first for Trivial Pursuit. His knowledge of beer is no exception:
Well ya see, Norm, it’s like this… A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.”

Two things about the actor that played Cliff Calvin stick in my mind:
1. When in the early 90s they tried to make Coors popular in the UK, they used him for the TV ads (they have since given up and it’s as rare as hen’s teeth over here, hooray)
2. Once I was watching back-to-back classic movies on a Bank Holiday Monday. Ghandi was on, followed by the classic Anglo-American war movie A Bridge Too Far. He had a small speaking part in both of them.
That’s all I have to say about the funny little chap. Apart from this - unlike 99% of the British people, who didn’t understand why it was being inflicted on us, I actually enjoyed Cheers.
